At 6.20 am GMT+1 today an earthquake happened with epicenter in Southern Sweden (65 km or 40 miles from Copenhagen) The shake came from 10 km down and lasted 10-12 seconds.

It was measured to 4.7 on the Richter Scale, which is very rare here. Since they have begun surveing seismological activity here since 1930 or so, there has only been one even comparable to this. Earth tremors happen everywhere, but in Scandinavia they are not even noticable ... this was indeed.

What makes it so rare is that we are on a continental socket/plate with no fault lines near us. It however seems that it is pressure from the arctic and african plates that caused it.

People experienced the building shaking, the bed starting to wobble, windows rattling. I slept blissfully through it, but lots of people felt it and of course since it is so rare and unlikely here, they went: "What the #/%&"¤/!#"/# heck is happening????!!!"

But only a few road pavements have cracked, a couple of buildings got some minor cracks in walls, and the authorities have already checked up on bridges and other large structures, and so far no mentionable damage is reported.

Of course, even if big for our standards, it is not as Indonesian or other earthquakes in very active zones that can be up at 7 or 8 on Richter scale (reminder,... Richter Scale is logarithmic so just 1 point up from 4 to 5 means 100 times bigger, and a 7 or 8 up to 900 times more violent.

There was one casualty though...

A shelf fell on a pet turtle north of Copenhagen, and the poor turtle died.

Anyways on a more serious note, I refer to my post about "Nuclear Future" and the last entry I made there... about the Finland project with worlds largest fission reactor and their steadfast belief in that nuclear waste can be deposited safely for many thousands of years.
