As prolly most people know, they have some shark attacks at the world famous diving resort Sharm el-Sheikh, situated at the southern tip of the Sinai peninsula.

Now, I certainly don't want a 3 meter long shark biting my ass... but.... the actions and reactions are ridiculous.

First of all... they FEED sharks there... DON'T do that, please, you teach the shark new behaviour patterns swimming closer to shore. You don't go out on the savanna in Africa and wave a pork chop in front of a lion do you???
People that are experts say that it's a white-tipped shark that is responsible for attacks (one of the four most dangerous sharks in world... along with the big white and hammerhead) It's an ocean going shark, not a shore shark, so it must somehow have gotten used to being fed and coming closer to shore.

Secondly... the government send out patrols to kill sharks, they came back with two reef sharks, which do NOT attack humans ( not that I know of at least) and told everybody that they found the culprit, which is a lot of.... BS lol. Of course it is due to Egypt is relying heavily on tourism which is responsible for over 10 % of their BNP... so they don't want to inform people about it, and when forced they try some evasive tactics to downplay the whole thing... well folks, sharks are sharks... if you don't want your butt in trouble, stay in the pool ! LOL ... otherwise live with it, sharks usually don't see humans as dinner and if you see one coming at you, advice is, stay calm and punch it in the eye or at the gills... that usually makes them go away.... oh and stay focused on it... sharks like to attack from behind.... but personally I would prolly set a world record in trying to not walk, ... but RUN on water Smile

Thirdly... as one expert said: uh... so you go kill the sharks due to what... 4 dead? out of three million tourists a year?..... it's like if you have a traffic accident and you stop all traffic in whole country and kill 3 drivers just to be safe???

And the sharks are actually an endangered species in a very high degree, due to humans and our fishing methods on the world oceans. The shark is super important for the biological balance in oceans... and I read somewhere that about 100.000 sharks get killed each year... caught by mistake in nets (sharks have to constantly move to stay alive btw) or just killed for their fins...to make shark fin soup... they catch the fantastic animal, cut off it's fins and throw it out again.... alive....fantastic ! ... at least kill it !!!

Oh well.....

Hammerheads r not one of the 4 most dangerous sharks...they rarely attack humans..Bull sharks should be on that list

I found a list on the net where it is only rated number 8 most dangerous out of around 400 shark types.... Wink

Having looked up the world famous diving resort Sharm El-Sheikh in Egypt on the internet it sure looks like a nice place, it is considered to be the jewel of the Sinai.

As for the sharks, whether it’s a hammerhead, a reef shark or whatever shark…. uh well doesnt matter what number they are rated at or what type of shark it is when your out diving.... YIKES... I wouldnt want to be in that predicament thats for sure so staying in the pool sounds like a neat idea Smile …or as you put it Cheiron……… RUN on water LOL.

After looking at pictures of the resort and looking outside my window and seeing lots of snow.............Im thinking hmmm doesn't a pina colada and relaxing on a beach sound perfect just about now??? Smile

Welcome to winter folks and lots of SNOW, be careful driving and walking on ice covered sidewalks. Smile

mjeh, Flexie... it is considered to be one of the top best diving places in the world with a beautiful coral reef, crystal clear water and underwater caves, it ranks up there with the great barrier reef in Australia,

I was meaning to go there on my vacation to Egypt and get a diving certificate too, but alas, I had to cancel that vacation that would have taken me from Cairo and Giza (the great pyramids), along the Nile to Sakhara and various archeological sites... all the way to Karnak and Valley of the Kings (Wadi Biban el-Muluk).... and then... with hydrofoil boat to Abu Simbel, close to the border to Sudan.... then a plane to Sinai and Sharm El-Sheikh to dive and get a certificate... to top it off with a motorbike ride through the desert to the mountain where allegedly Moses got the stone tablets to spend some hours thinking.... oh well... maybe some day, but we had it planned Smile

The dream lives on....

PS: I did however snorkel in Red Sea many years ago, at Eilat, southern tip of Israel... it was fantastic.
