I found it a bit disturbing, dunno what you think, or if it's true what she says... but that's a mean way to teach kids to do everyday math,... again... if true.

Good grief!!!
Tis no wonder our kids can't do math...
That is just nonsense....... to me , it proves, what i call the "old fashion" way works best.......... we had no calculators....... i have my doubts about any child being able to actually manually solve a math problem, which is truly sad..
I agree Che , it is scary....

Here's a little puzzle to ponder when you get time...

MATH PROBLEM:

In a bus there are 7 girls, each girl has 7 backpacks, in each backpack there are 7 big cats, each cat has 7 kittens, and each cat has 4 legs.

How many legs are there in the bus?

assuming not a trick question, 10990. Or 14 if you want to say the cats aren't in the bus because they are in the backpacks.

As to the vid, my god, can they make it any more confusing. What's even scarrier, I'M IN WASHINGTON STATE WHERE THE GAL IS TALKING ABOUT.

I tried doing 7381 x 464 using the lattice method, and winded up with running to the shop screaming for a sixpack and some cigs, just to calm down again.

however... the partial products method (or a variation of it) is ... I think, what we use when no pencil and paper is at hand (or calculator), and we just have to think our way to it.

PS: and my sympathies to Washington, you better check your change at the grocery, Scotsman when the kids get into jobs.

What's even sadder is reading that problem what goes through my head is "number of legs on the bus? Do we know the girls are the only ones on the bus? What about the driver? Are there any other passengers?"

*sigh*, I've been doing software waaayyy to long.

to make things funnier... a little story about how I got the puzzle.

a friend of mine sent it with a excel spreadsheet, when you get the answer, you are supposed to use that to open the spreadsheet that is passworded, you can then add your name to the list of people who solved it, and send it on.

Now that is fine, until I discovered that Microsoft Works spreadsheet can not handle a passworded Excel spreadsheet ! ... that must be yummy for you software guys that are not exactly over jubilant about Microsoft lol

(works spreadsheet has file extension .xlr ... excel has .xls, I dread finding out what else is different between them if you try to share work between them, one thing though... works can not to my knowledge do nested cells.. duh)

PS: and yes I arrived at 10990 too, Scots, I will send the original mail to my laptop that has Microsoft excel so I can test if that is it... sigh.

while I'm in the Microsoft bashing mood...

long time ago I had a Mac. I could print out a list of the content of a folder (directory) in list mode.

then I got a windows PC... and one day wanted a file list from that printed out. Ummm... not possible.

I asked a friend back then who worked in a big company with a windows helpdesk department.even, to ask the guys there how to print out a list of content of a folder... and they gave up too.

I just tried on XP now... ummm .. still not possible.

well command line DOS thing could prolly do it, I know.. but.. ummm

so how do I do that?... take a screenshot?

MS just kinda hides that stuff rather than confuse the masses..
Vista, (XP is about the same Commands).. In Vista if the Shift key is held down while right-clicking a folder, the context menu will contain an entry, "Open Command Window Here". Selecting this entry will open a command prompt with the chosen folder as the reference point for commands. So you can dir and "pipe" to file, screen or printer. Also clip.exe can be used to redirect or "pipe"the output of another command to the Windows clipboard.
The command uses a "pipe" and has the form:
anycommand | clip
For example, to send a directory listing to the clipboard, the command is:
dir | clip
BTW, batch files and Alternate Data Streams (forks) in Windows NTFS Files are there for your use as well, so don't bashum too hard.

Hate to tell you Cheiron, but in OS X you can't print a file list from the finder either. Only way I can see to do it is using the terminal window and command line.

well goddammit... why on earth not include that feature anymore???

if anything is confusing the masses it is surely not having that feature and instead having to have a degree in DOS for printing out a simple file list !

oh well... btw I couldn't do the stuff Bri said... I tried shift, ctrl, alt, shift + ctrl, ...etc

"Open Command Window Here" in Vista

Shift key is held down while right-clicking a folder, the context menu will contain an entry, "Open Command Window Here". Selecting this entry will open a command prompt with the chosen folder as the reference point for commands.

XP you would have to CD or enter the path. ala
dir D:\cherfolder >listcherfolder.txt
