World Run II has started. The longest run ever. From north to south and back again, starting in Nordkap in northern Norway, going down Europe and through whole of Africa to tip of South Africa, flying to tip of South America and running through South America and USA to New Foundland.

Jesper Olsen, a danish runner from Copenhagen, in this discipline of "ultrarun" (who also participated in World Run 1 that ran east-west) expects it to last 800 days without a break, he will have to run 50 km (= 31 miles) each day... that is more than a marathon, ladies and gents. In an interview he said he will expect to use up around 40 pairs of running shoes.. in all the run is 40.000 km long (= 24855 miles)

The logistics are of course rather extensive for this run, with various support groups, and runners participating for only parts of it. But the dane, as well as Sarah Barnett, australian runner from Adelaide, expects to complete the full run .

The whole project will be documented with everything you can throw at it of blogs, tv-coverage etc, you can even track the runners by GPS on the website on a daily basis and of course there will be news updates there also.

Here is a snippet from website about it:

Quote:
During the run there will be live tracking by gps - enabling web-spectators to follow in the footsteps of the runners live on the website map, along with daily gps-located pictures, video-clips and a short text report from the runners. On a weekly basis, "World Run Radio" will be broadcast live on this website from the roads of the world.

Local runners and ultrarunners are encouraged and welcome to take part in the stages of the run and thus also become part of the World Run 2 ! We will enjoy the company very much and will try to give a 'runners perspective' of the world, its countries and continents Smile

This is not a political run, but a celebration of the Earth and the possibilities it gives when difficulties are overcome !
!

They started July 2008... latest report here in beginning of March 2009...

Startline was in Nordkap in nothern Norway about 500 km above arctic circle and they have now reached Khartoum in Sudan, and seems to be bogged down for some days due to some unstability in region, but reports are that the ordinary civilian Sudanse are very friendly people.

Both Jesper Olsen (DK) and Sarah Barnett (AU) seems to be doing fine, but have been through tough times in various ways.... Jesper said that one of the worst parts was the Romanian mountains in snow.

Logistically worst problem now is getting some support group organized for southern Africa and also South America
