110 year old becomes a father !

Male potency is always a delicate subject, but nobody would perhaps be surprised that it is not at it's peak when you are 110 years old.

"I had given up on old Henry", says Lindsay Hazley, an inspector at Southland Museum where Henry lives to CNN. And Henry is not Mr. Nobody, he is a tuatara, a rare species of lizard that stems directly from the dinosaurs.

Born in 1890
Since Henry was born in the 1890's the tuatara species has been threatened by extinction and therefore Henry's potency and interest in the opposite sex has been followed closely. But it looked bad, so bad in fact that Henry has spent 40 years in isolation because he attacked female tuataras when they got close.

Well... Henry is not the first of the male orientation that has become bitter on his old days, but in 2002 veterinarians discovered a lump in Henry's private parts. It turned out to be a cancer and they removed it. And slowly Henry started to change personality.

Personality change
"I usually say that Henry got a personality transplant at the same time. If I had a tumor in my balls I would have been fairly bitter myself everytime a girl walked by", says Hazley.

And in March it happened - Henry fell for the somewhat younger Mildred, aged 70-80 years and recently Mildred layed 12 eggs - where 11 of them seems ok. If the small ones make it, it will be a big thing for the tuatara species that is a direct decendant from the dinosaurs that lived 200 million years ago.

Henry has many years left
"I'm excited ! I won't count the kids until they hatch, but for every day that goes by I become more and more confident that it will turn out good", says Hazley.

Henry even has his best score years in front of him, because even if he is born in 1890 he is only middle age still. Tuatara lizards lives way past 100 years.

"I think he will score ladies long after I am gone", ends Hazley.

All I can say is: Way to go, Henry, go go go !!! Wink

PS: you can read more about Henry if you google: "Henry the Tuatara"

After further research I feel obliged to forward latest facts and corrections to my first posting:

1) Henry is not a lizard, he belongs to the reptile family, but for some reason the dinosaur related is not lizards.

2) It turns out he has been in captivity for 40 years. He has "only" been sentenced to solitary confinement for 17 years, and the exact reason was: He bit off Mildreds tail during a mating attempt ! Shocked

3) After the successful surgery where Henry refound his romantic mood, he has not only mated with the obviously very forgiving Mildred, but allegedly also has romantic feelings for 2 other female tuataras, quite a Ladies' man indeed.

Due to the strong interest in Mildred, I managed to find a picture of her... uhhhhmm, it is Henry on top of her:

I also managed to track names of the other ladies there: Lucy and Juliet... and a male called Albert, but he is only 22 years old, just a young punk.

and here is a wiki link for even more info about what a tuatara is:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tuatara

(which is quite interesting reading, I might add)

Was most interested in your article on the Tuatara Cheiron, as it is a native to my country New Zealand. It has outlived the dinosaurs and is unique! It is rarely seen on the mainland now due to wild animals ( mostly wildcats) but thrives on offshore Islands where it has no natural enemies. It is also unique in that it has a third eye which is covered by a layer of skin and cant be seen. I wish sometimes I had one of those lol. Long may this rare reptile thrive and may your 2 Tuatara's have many healthy babies. Thanks for the article Cheiron.
